Just this year, the CDC announced that the prevalence of autism is now 1 in 36 children. With this new number it’s more likely than ever that someone close to you has autism. Autism Acceptance is about seeing autistic individuals not in terms of their differences but recognizing them for their strengths, talents, and capabilities. It is about acknowledging that autism is a common real -life human experience. Autism Acceptance is expanding our compassion and empathy for the autism community without trying to "cure" them. Autism is to be appreciated.

My daughter was diagnosed with autism at 2 years of age. Her favorite flower is a sunflower. I’ve learned recently that sunflowers are heliotropic, meaning that they track the sun across the sky. Wouldn't it be silly, indeed, for a gardener to think that their sunflowers are broken just because their manner of reacting to the world around them is less common or different from "standard flower behavior". Its unique beauty serves as a reminder of how we should look for the light in the world around us. Individuals with autism have every right to track their own path and to thrive where they are planted. The world's bouquet is all the brighter for their inclusion.
